It is also platform dependent, and my goal is to wean myself off of any particular platform, which makes FreeMind an ideal candidate.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;I also think that many people shy away from mindmapping applications because the commercial ones tend to be expensive.  FreeMind is, well, free.
